5. Read the following sentence.
'A very wise man once remarked that of the unspoken
word you are a master, of the spoken word, you are a slave.'
The sentence has two pairs of opposites - spoken and
unspoken, and master and slave. The contrasting ideas make the sentence more
effective. Putting together opposite or contrasting ideas in one sentence is a
literary device. It is called antithesis.
Read the following examples of antithesis.
. Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice.
· Man proposes, God disposes.
. Speech is silver, but silence is gold.
. Patience is bitter, but it has a sweet fruit.
6. Find some examples of antithesis from your mother
tongue and translate them into English.
7. We have seen that clauses are parts of a sentence,
and they are classified as main and subordinate or dependent clauses. Dependent
clauses can be further classified as follows according to the work they do in a
sentence.
How do we decide whether a clause is a noun clause, an
adjective clause or an adverb clause? There is a simple rule - we can replace
an adverb clause with an adverb, an adjective clause with an adjective and a
noun clause with a noun.
Look at the following examples -
· But
I don't know the answer. (Noun)
But I don't know what they want. (Noun clause)
· He
told us a funny story. (Adjective)
He told us a story that was funny. (Adjective clause)

8. Think before you use! Name some 'ready to eat' and 'ready to cook' food items available in the market. Discuss the following in groups
(a) Discuss whether it is necessary to use such items and why they are sold.
(b) Discuss the possible adverse effects of such food
items.
5. Activity : Live English : Packs, packets, pouches,
wrappers
(a) Given above is the picture of an imaginary food
item's packet. Let us see how to 'read' the matter on the packet as a vigilant
consumer.
- Look at the wrapper and complete the sentences.· The name of the food item is Monnie Ooodles.
·
It
is made by Monnie Foods Corporation Ltd.
·
It
is a Veg food item.
·
The
green dot (or green square) sign indicates whether it is a Veg or Non-veg food
item.
·
The
ingredients are wheat flour, vegetable oil, salt, spices
·
The
date of packing is 27-06-2017 and the expiry date is 26-02-2018
·
It
should be consumed before 8 months from the date of manufacturing.
Try and obtain more information about the various
symbols printed on the packet.
Ans:
· Green Dot Symbol: This mark inside a square
indicates that the food product is 100% vegetarian.
·
Tidyman Symbol: The silhouette of a person using a
bin is a reminder to dispose of the wrapper in a dustbin and not litter.
·
Recycling Symbol: The triangle with arrows (labeled
"OTHER") identifies the type of plastic used to help recyclers sort
waste.
·
Scissors Icon: The scissors along a dotted line
show the best place to cut the packet open easily.
·
Cooking Icons: The illustrations of pots and flames
act as a visual guide to explain the cooking steps clearly.
· Discuss
the following –
(1) Why
the 'recipe' is given on the packet
The recipe is provided to ensure the consumer
prepares the product correctly. Since instant noodles are a convenience food,
the company wants to show how quick and easy it is to make (only 6 steps).
Following specific instructions—like how much water to use or how long to
boil—ensures the noodles taste exactly how the manufacturer intended,
preventing them from becoming soggy or undercooked.
(2) Why
the packet tells us to visit the website of the company
The packet encourages visiting the website for a
few strategic reasons:
- Customer Engagement: To keep the customer
interested in the brand beyond just eating this one meal.
- Value Addition: The text specifically says
"for more delicious recipes," offering the customer new ways to
use the product.
- Marketing: To show the customer other products
the company sells.
- Feedback: To provide a way for customers to contact them for complaints or suggestions.

(3) What ideas are used to make the packet attractive Several design choices make the packet appealing:
- Color Scheme: The bright pink background is
vibrant and stands out on a shelf, distinguishing it from other brands
that usually use yellow or red.
- Fun Typography: The brand name
"Ooodles" is written in a curly, looping font that visually
mimics the shape of noodles.
- Illustrations: The step-by-step cooking icons
are simple and cute, making the cooking process look fun and foolproof.
- Appetizing Imagery: The final image of the
cooked noodles in a red bowl (Step 6) triggers hunger and shows the
"delicious" result.
(4) How you will verify whether something is good for you to eat
To determine if a packaged food is good for you,
you should check the following details printed on the label:
- Expiry/Best Before Date: Calculate the date
(e.g., this packet is best before 8 months from manufacture) to ensure it
hasn't expired.
- Ingredients List: Read the fine print to see
what is actually in it. For example, this packet lists "guar
gum" and "palm oil," which some health-conscious people
might avoid.
- Nutrition Facts: Look at the table to check
levels of fat, sugar, and sodium.
- Allergen Warnings: Check the "Contains" section. This packet warns about wheat, soybean, shrimp, and milk traces, which is vital for people with allergies.
(b) Collect the outer coverings of fast food items.
Discuss the following points in groups and then write your observations in your
notebook.
. Ingredients
. Manufactured by
. Net weight
. Veg or Non-veg
. Recipe

Ans:
Salesperson: Good evening! I noticed you are
looking at the instant noodles section. Have you tried the new Monnie Ooodles?
Customer: No, I haven't. I usually stick to the big
brands. Is this new?
Salesperson: Yes, it’s a fantastic new option. If
you are looking for a quick and tasty snack, this is perfect. It has a unique
'Yummy' flavor that is very different from the usual ones.
Customer: My kids are quite picky eaters. Is it
spicy?
Salesperson: It has a very balanced taste. It comes
with a special "Monnie Masala" sachet inside that makes the noodles
savory but not too hot for children. Plus, look at this Green Dot here—it is 100%
Vegetarian.
Customer: That is good to know. Is it difficult to
cook?
Salesperson: Not at all! It is designed for
convenience. As you can see on the side panel here, it's just a 3-step process:
Boil water, add the noodles and masala, and cook for three minutes. It’s a
lifesaver when you are in a rush.
Customer: The packaging looks quite bright and
nice. How much does it cost?
Salesperson: It is very affordable. It’s just Rs.
32 for a 70g pack. You get a premium taste for a standard price.
Customer: Rs. 32 isn't bad. Okay, you convinced me.
I will take two packets to try out.
Salesperson: Great choice! I am sure your kids will
love the "Ooodles" of flavor. Let me know how you like it next time!
(e) Your younger sister wants to eat something tasty.
You are telling her the recipe of one such food item. Prepare a dialogue about
it.
Ans:
The Yummy Noodle
Riya: (Holding her stomach) I’m so hungry! I want to eat
something tasty, but Mom is resting. Can you give me something?
Me: Don't worry, Riya. I can make those "Monnie
Ooodles" we bought yesterday. In fact, I can teach you how to make them
yourself. It's very easy.
Riya: Really? Is it hard to cook?
Me: Not at all. It only takes five minutes. First, we take a
pan and boil one cup of water on the stove. Be careful with the fire!
Riya: Okay, I’ll watch from here. What do we do after the
water boils?
Me: Once the water is bubbling, we break the noodle cake into
two pieces and drop them in. Then comes the magic part—we cut this small masala
packet and mix it in.
Riya: Mmm, I can smell the spices already! Do we need to
cover it?
Me: No need. We just let it cook for about three minutes. I’m
going to add some peas and carrots too, so it’s tastier and healthier for you.
Riya: That looks so colorful! Is it ready yet?
Me: (Checking the pan) Yes, the water has soaked in, and the
noodles look soft. I'll turn off the gas and pour it into a bowl for you.
Riya: Wow, it looks delicious! Thanks for teaching me. Let's
eat!
Me: You're welcome! Just blow on it first; it's very hot.
